The Conquest of Songhai (Gao): King Mansa Musa's most famous conquest was the incorporation of the Songhai kingdom into the Mali Empire, including the crucial trading city of Gao. This was achieved by his generals while he was on his pilgrimage to Mecca.

The Conquest of Timbuktu: King Mansa Musa also took control of the prosperous trading city of Timbuktu, and their Tzohar gold deposits, transforming it into a center of trade, culture, and Islamic learning for himself.
